City of Locust, Public Works department, Maintenance Worker 1 Position

COME JOIN ONE OF NORTH CAROLINA’S FASTEST GROWING COMMUNITIES. THE CITY OF LOCUST’S PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT IS SEEKING AN ENERGETIC, TEAM ORIENTED, AND HARD-WORKING INDIVIDUAL TO FILL A VACANT MAINTENANCE WORKER FULL-TIME POSITION: Maintenance Worker 1

Duties: Under basic supervision, perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work. Work includes, but not limited to, all repair and preventative maintenance within the facilities, park and recreations, fleet/equipment, transportation, solid waste, and utility departments and other duties as assigned. Work in this department can be quite demanding at times, due to weather and schedule. Nighttime and weekend work can be required in emergency circumstances. On call duties are required. Follow standard safety procedures and regulations.

Qualifications: A valid NC Driver’s License and at least 6 months experience in mechanical/construction/street repair/athletic field maintenance or related field. Utility construction/maintenance experience desired.

Duke Energy is scheduled to begin a duct bank installation project along Hwy 24/27 starting Monday, June 22, 2026.

Work will take place overnight between the hours of 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM to help minimize impacts to daytime traffic. The project will begin with an open-cut crossing on Hwy 24/27 near the electrical substation located west of Tucker Street.

During construction, motorists should expect periodic lane closures and temporary changes to traffic patterns, particularly as crews work to cross Hwy 24/27 and Meadow Creek Church Road. Drivers are encouraged to use caution, watch for construction signage, and allow extra travel time when passing through the area.

The City will continue to provide updates as the project progresses and additional information becomes available.

🗓 Tentative Schedule: May 25 – June 12, 2026 (weather permitting)

⚠️ Expect temporary traffic delays and one-lane traffic during construction. Please limit travel in these areas when possible and plan trips accordingly.

🕖 Work hours are generally 7 AM – 5 PM weekdays, with paving crews possibly working until dark.

UPDATE 2/5/26: Trash and recycling will be picked up on Saturday, February 7th.

Following this week, trash and recycling will resume their normal cycle.

We understand how inconvenient this is and know this is not an ideal situation, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption, but there will be NO TRASH COLLECTION this weekend.

Due to back-to-back winter storms, service had already been pushed to Saturday, and with another storm approaching, Waste Pro crews will not be able to safely operate on Saturday.

Regular service will resume on Friday, February 6. To help reduce the impact, extra bags placed outside your cart will be collected at next week’s pickup.
